Your game. Your choice.

Privacy, plainly.

CRSWRD needs a little information to remember your puzzles, keep scores and connect a room. Optional usage measurements help us make the game better. Here is what each part does.

Optional analytics

Allow coarse counts of pages opened, buttons used, sharing, active time and page speed. These events contain no player ID, display name, typed letters, clue text, room code, full URL or advertising identifier.

Enable JavaScript to view and change this browser's preference. Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control are also respected.

Your choice is saved in this browser and can be changed here at any time.

What keeps your game working

  • Player identity. A signed crswrd_p cookie remembers a random player ID and display name. A companion crswrd_pid cookie helps keep cached identity and result responses separate when different players use one device. A newly signed identity lasts at most 400 days; expiry is checked by the server as well as the browser.
  • Results. Submitted solves, streaks, multiplayer results and your display name support your profile and leaderboards. A player database record is created when you take an action that needs one, such as submitting a result or saving a name.
  • Live rooms. Players in the same room see names, presence and game progress. Co-op shares letters and cursor positions so people can solve together. A room link should be shared with the people you want to join.
  • Optional passkeys. If you add a passkey, its public key helps you recover the same identity on another device. CRSWRD does not receive your fingerprint, face scan or device PIN.
  • Browser storage. Settings, unfinished solo puzzles, offline results and practice progress stay in this browser. Clearing site data removes that local progress and may reset your identity unless you have a passkey.

What analytics sees

CRSWRD sends its own bounded event data to Cloudflare Analytics Engine. It uses labels such as “daily”, “practice”, “mobile”, “share succeeded” and a duration. A multiplayer URL becomes a route template; its room code is discarded. Incoming referrers become broad categories such as search, an AI assistant or a social site.

Turning optional analytics off stops browser events, speed reports and page-visit analytics for this browser. The site still processes the requests and game records needed to run the service. Server-side aggregate counts of starts, completed games and hint requests continue to support operation of the game. These event counts have no player identifiers.

The preference is stored as crswrd_analytics in browser storage and a first-party cookie. It contains only “on” or “off”. There are no advertising trackers, cross-site tracking scripts or analytics session IDs.

When you use an AI hint

An optional AI hint sends the selected puzzle clue and the context needed to create a useful hint to Cloudflare Workers AI. There is no open-ended chat box, and the model does not need your name or player ID. Authored guided hints and the practice strategy coach also work without a live AI model.

Hints are checked before display, and a guided fallback is used when an AI reply is unavailable or unsuitable. Learn more in the AI crossword hint guide.

Questions about your information

The site runs on Cloudflare Workers, D1, KV and Durable Objects. Network and security systems process request information, including IP addresses, to deliver the service and limit abuse; IP addresses are not copied into the site's analytics events.
